How To Do Conversational Hypnosis

It was Milton Erikson who first envisioned the philosophy of conversational hypnosis. He thought that trance states were not rare events that needed to be induced through elaborate measures. Instead, he believed that people slip into trance states many times each day, like when they are waiting in line or concentrating hard on something. The question now is this: How to do conversational hypnosis? Erikson enumerated three elements that will make hypnotic inductions much more effective – rapport, confusion, and suggestion.

The hypnotist needs to establish rapport with the client by agreeing with him. He also needs to confuse the issue by using confusing statements, encouraging resistance in the client, or remarking that the client needs to do more of the same thing that isn’t working. Finally, the hypnotist needs to make an indirect suggestion to the client.

Using conversational hypnosis effectively takes practice and skill. One of the easy techniques of doing it is through the use of reciprocation. For example, if you are trying to get someone to do something for you and you know that you are likely to get resistance, try to do something similar for the person and make sure that he notices it. This way, when you eventually make your request, you are more likely to get compliance.

Another technique is through the use of liking. This works on the principle that people are more likely to do things for people they like. You may notice that this technique goes back to Erikson’s theory that rapport is essential in hypnotic inductions.

You can also use commitment or compromise. This works by reducing your request to a certain point that the person is likely to agree with, and making your full request later on.

Another probable technique is social proof, wherein you let the person know of other people who have done or might do what you want him to do.

All these techniques revolve around interaction. The hypnotist nudges the client into a state of altered perception about the situation that is being discussed by asking questions or stating facts that direct the client to re-evaluate the situation.

Just like what Milton Erikson said, conversational hypnosis is simply about affinity, distraction, and proposition – rapport, confusion, and suggestion – the power of communication.
